First XS650 Build, What to Look For

Here's 5twins' plug boot charts:

For your selected LB05F plug boots, remove the screw caps from atop your BP7ES plugs...

Those plugs are fine. They'll work with either type of plug cap. You just need to remove the terminal "nut" from the threaded portion on top. You may need to use pliers to loosen it.

I've never encountered a BP that didn't have the removable top terminal nut. I know some of the Champions guys like to use have a solid non-removable terminal nut. Come to think of it, many auto specific plugs are made that way.

Haha, I clearly have much to learn. Started riding two years ago (at 24) so this whole build was pretty ambitious but it's definitely coming along nicely. Just trying to get a better sense of the wiring, which is the most confusing portion I've encountered so far.

in the misc plug box, one each way.... Think NAPA tried to sell me BP7ES with fixed caps once.
I think the quick tell is; removable caps are bright silver, fixed caps are more black/bronze toned.

Those are BPR's, resistor plugs. Maybe some of them do come that way. Like I said, I've never seen a plain BP with the solid top.

So I've got the plug caps and the wires, but do I also need to buy a terminal to attach to the end of the stripped wire before inserting that into the plug cap?

I have regular wire strippers as well, but I'm not sure if they work for spark plug wires since they're significantly thicker.

If you look in the wire end of your plug cap, you'll see what looks like the threaded portion of a wood or sheet metal screw. Basically, you just "screw" the cap onto and into the end of the plug wire. I prep the ends of my plug wires first like so. I strip about 1/8" of the insulation off then fan the strands of the wire core out in a radial pattern. I brush a little dielectric grease on the end of the wire and about 1/2" up it's sides before screwing the cap on .....

Be sure you slide the rubber boot for the cap/wire connection up onto the wire first before you install the cap.

Sounds perfect. That wire looks pretty thin actually so I may be able to do it with my current wire strippers.

One more question while the thread seems to be hot with responses. Below is an excerpt from the Pamco site about wiring it correctly...

"2. Connect the red, green and black wires from the left side of the E-Advancer box to the coil, battery and ground with the red wire going to the switched battery terminal of the coil, the green wire going to the other coil terminal and the black wire going to a suitable frame ground."

When it says to connect the red wire to the "switched battery terminal of the coil," what does that mean exactly? Once I determine which side that is, I see I'm supposed to wire to green wire to the other side and the black wire to a frame ground.

Perhaps I should first be asking, how do I wire the coil into the system? I'm using the red Andrews coil which has two terminals and two plug wire receptors. I may want to wire this in first then, as it seems I'll have to decide which side will be the switched battery terminal.

It's easy enough to strip the insulation off the plug wire with a small sharp knife. You don't need to use a wire stripper tool.

The two little terminals on a dual output coil don't have a specific polarity. In other words, there is no "+" and "-" terminal. You can hook the Pamco green to either one, the red and switched power from the battery to the other. "Switched battery terminal of the coil" means the terminal that power from your harness runs to. Personally, I don't like hooking the Pamco red to the coil. I prefer to attach it to a separate switched power wire. Don't forget to fuse the power wire to the coil. Use a 7.5A fuse.

I think I get it, but I'm a very visual learner so I drew this diagram to be sure I'm understanding what you're saying. Only potential spot I think I'm missing is where that 7.5amp fuse is supposed to be. If I've drawn it right that's great, but if not please let me know. Thank you!

Also meant to ask what the reason for not running the red wire from the e advancer straight into the coil. You mentioned that you didn't like to but I was curious to know what the benefit was. Thanks!

where is the ignition? you using a pamco?
Yea I'm using a Pamco. I left it out of the diagram because I know where it goes. It's once those wires come out of the e advancer that things get confusing. That said, I probably should have still included it in the picture.

If you have any info on whether my drawing is correct I'd love to hear it, thanks!

The 7.5amp fuse should be on the key side of the red wire going to the E-Advance. As per the diagram i posted.
