gggGary's latest XS project "madness"

THAT's when I found one of only TWO installed rear sprocket bolts had backed out and hit the shock mount, the other was loose.
Methinks it's time for a "preflight" checklist.... ".......6 bolts in the sprocket.... check. 6 bolts in the rotor...." ;)

I'm from the FAA and I'm here to help.

A big thank you Jim, that's some sharp thinking.
I went right down and looked.
All 6 were in and decent tight, the tabs aren't bent and that's OK for now.
I did get about an 1/8 turn out of one bolt and a smidge out of one other.
You guys are awesome!

Swing arm by the "talks kinda crazy Russian".
And yes I had tightened the axle.
An odd thing is I put the chain on just a couple days ago, o-ring chain, messing around with compressing the master link, all right at the sprocket. Didn't notice a damned thing.

I'll tell this story on myself.
I found one of only TWO installed rear sprocket bolts had backed out and hit the shock mount, the other was loose. Oops, had the sprocket off while measuring and had just finger tightened a couple bolts to make the axle spacers, then lost track of that little detail! That was all that supplied power for a 4 mile test ride and that burnout, gulp.

ooops naughty boy !

reminds me of the time I left my wheel nuts loose on the car.
I drove up my drive with my head out the door nearly on the ground ,...listening to the tick..tick tick ...BANG! . a tree caught the door and nearly decapitated me .......quick change of underwear.

Wonder why projects take me so long?
When i went to put a new tire on that rim I found it had a flat spot, ended up buying another Xs for the rear rim. It even came with a decent tire, then changed my mind and fitted this instead a 1978 Suzuki hub SS Spokes from mikes, a cut down rotor from the front of a GS 550 mated to the XS650 caliper and carrier, a few spacers made and a custom aluminum 33 tooth sprocket ordered and installed.

Put a 140/70/18 Shinko tire on it.
Well that made this look plain wrong.

So a serious game of musical wheels ensued
Period piece got the front star mag installed.
Freeing up a 2.15x19 spoke wheel.
That went on Resto
Freeing up this wheel and fender
DSCN8215.JPG
And today those went on madness with a pair of FZ750 rotors.
DSCN8977.JPG
The front wheel assembly went from 38 pounds down to 32. 6 pounds is a BIG reduction in rotating unsprung mass.
So now madness looks like this.

Nice brakes already and should improve as the pads seat into the rotors. Now I have til Sunday morning to straighten out several electrical issues and get the jetting sorted. So it's ready to ride to slimy crud. Then maybe do something about paint.

I love it--a wicked sleeper, built on the principle that real motorcycles should be faster than they look, not the other way around. Will we see that beast at Mountain View in June?

Racer Dave that's your front wheel that just got moved to Resto.
Edit; that's the second time it's been on resto. o_O

hey stock fuel line springs let me get rid of the fuel line elbows no kinking,
Tried 220 mains last night, too rich, back to 210's and raising the needles from slot 2 to 4.

Very slick indeed!

I find the fuel lines on an XS650 one of the most difficult parts of the bike to deal with - things are SO cramped in there with the stock carbs and airbox etc. that there is little room for even a tiny fuel filter.

Pete

Worked on a couple things took it out for a test with 210's and the needles up to slot 4, ran worse than ever, Then I said F-it and..........

I fixed my carb tuning problem.

Your new exhaust configuration is similar to mine. Similar overall length, and the exhaust pulse waveshaping feature of the double cone, mitigates the unwanted portion of reversion...

Loving the sleeper look!!! Those matching high shoulder wheels are SUWHEET!!! I bet that helped things out a LOT
