Challenging carb installation - new holders

Hello, I installed new Tour Max carb holders on my 1979 XS650 Special II. Now I have a hard time installing the carbs; they just don't want to enter the holders. I used silicon grease and even warm air from a hair dryer to make the carb holders more pliable in the cold garage, but I...

    BS38's: vacuum fittings

Thank you 5twins, now it makes sense! I have carb holders with vacuum barbs so I don't need them on the carbs. Can I just leave it this way or should I relocate the choke housing so things are symmetrical? Armin

    BS38's: vacuum fittings

Hello, I am in the process of replacing the throttle shaft seals of the BS38's of my 1979 XS650 Special II. No issues with the replacement but I was wondering why the left carburetor has vacuum fittings (plugged with screws; 2 fittings?) and the right one does not. I went through the carb...

    Throttle shaft seal installation

Hello, I am in the process of replacing the throttle shaft seals on my 1979 XS650 Special II. Thanks to my new Japanese screwdrivers and some WD40 removing the original butterfly valve screws was easier than I had expected. My question: should the seals and shaft be installed dry or...

    My '78 so far

Good! Have you drained/rinsed the tank (is there any rust inside?) and disassembled/cleaned the petcocks? Drain and take off the float bowls of the carbs. If they are less than very clean you should thoroughly clean the carburetors. Are the air filters clean? Armin

    My '78 so far

The side oil strainer is under the small round cover in the right hand side. Remove also the sump plate on the bottom of the engine and check/replace the oil strainer which most likely is damaged. Check the strainers (and get fresh oil) before you start the engine. Make sure there are...

    Timing marks

Hello, I was checking the ignition timing on my 1979 Special II with a timing light. At 1,200 rpm one cylinder fired a little to the left of the "F", the other one a little to the right. I checked the shop manual but it is still unclear to me where exactly they should fire (between the...
