Another XS bought back to life.

Another parcel from Mikes XS arrived today and I'm pretty gutted with one item in it.Now ,I have spent over $2000.00 with Mikes over the last few months ( That works out nearly $3000.00 Kiwi dollars without counting freight) and to be fair most things I have been pretty happy with. Some not so much but the finish on this switch assembly is rubbish. If this had been the first thing I bought from him I would never have bought anything else.Actually the wiring loom I got in the last lot wasn't very good either. The headlight plug only just got to the steering neck.I don't know if there are other issues as I haven't really started on the wiring yet.View attachment 100326 View attachment 100327 View attachment 100328
Lindsay try Geoffs XS in Oz

You wouldn't be a Southern man would you geedubya? I have looked at Geoffs site before but found it a bit hard to find my way around from memory.Plus I haven't given up on Mikes yet.

650Skull , send a message when you're nearer, will try and catch up for a beer somewhere.
I did buy this -Basic High Output Standard Ignition/XSCharge PMA Package which I think was Pamco from Mikes.

G'day Lindsay,
Southern Man...no, I am from the north in the tropics as is Skull. Nice and warm unlike the Shaky Isles.

Geoff's site is not as easy to manage however, exchange rate and postage is superior to Mikes and a lot of his products appear the same as Mikes.
I found if I could not find it a phone call or Email would fix it. I have also found a Yamaha dealer in Oz where if you search using the P/No. from the Parts Cattle-dog they will have more up to date super-session.

Got a reply from Mikes which basically said " Very sorry , there's a new one on the way, thanks for being a customer" Excellent Mikes.

Next thing to chase up are carbs. One of mine has a broken body and missing some parts so I thought I might as well get a matching pair.I thought I would stick with stock but do I need to stick with the early ones or can I shop around for something later as well?

Wow , over a year since the last post.Lots happened since then,(busy life stuff)
She's getting very close. Wiring to get done, a front brake line, those spark plug wires will get shortened when I work out the firing order and I need to find a latch to hold the seat down or I'll just make something to do the job.

Is there any reason I can't just connect these two nipples below the ports with a length of tubing?I bought a set of air cleaner housings after reading that they are harder to tune with pods but the housings didn't fit my carb/frame combo so I'm going to run pods but thought that connecting these two might help with smoother running.

What sort of latch am I looking for to fit this? I suspect it's like the top photo but that's on Ebay and converted to New Zealand dollars with freight it's $140.00, then another 15% tax when it gets here so if anyone has fabricated one I would be keen to see a picture of it.

Yes, that is the seat latch you need. It's a combo seat/helmet lock. Don't limit your search to just 650 parts. That same latch was used on several other Yamaha models. You might score one of those cheaper. The one I'm using came from an XS500 .....

Yes, you can just connect those two nipples below the ports with a length of hose. In fact, that's what was originally done with them.

Hey - I just noticed that Lindsay's crankcase oil fill specification is 3000 cc's - whereas every one I've ever seen is 2500 cc. What gives?

Pete

The original '70 XS1 balance tubing was rather firm, and included an internal spring to prevent collapsing.

Then, starting with the '71 XS1B, an outer spring was added...

Hi Mitch, had my first trip over to Aussie this time last year. Spent a few days traveling down from Alice to Port Augusta and wound up staying a few days in a place called Quorn where my niece lived. I can understand why so many mates moved over and stayed.
The Monaro is at the computer doctors place now because my original motor split a bore and took the top off a piston.I would have sleeved the bore because there was a lot of money in machining that block for the stroker kit but you can't get the right pistons anymore. In the finish I went late model 304 V8 out of a VT Commodore ( they're roller cam by then ) and matching auto. I've got mixed feelings about that ,on one hand it'll be economical and more user friendly and still heaps of power but on the other hand I've lost the old school feel.
