saw this on another forum, could this be a alternative to the radioshack set up?

Oxblood,

Looks like it will work. I like the built in heat sink. You will only need one of them because it is a three phase rectifier.

Yes, it's a bit over kill on the ratings but it will work. A 90 amp, 1000 volts.
The stock alternator has about 20 amps max. With a good regulator 14.5 volts. but can reach about 20 volts unregulated.
97 mm x 60 mm x 28 mm is about 3 13 /16 inch x 2 3/8 inch x 1 1/8 inch. About the size of the later combo reg/rec's. That's mostly heat sink.
It should work fine.
If they had one that was around 25 amps 25 volts for about half that price would be great.

You got me thinking, so I did some checking. Just put 3 phase bridge rectifier in the search on Ebay. They start around $4.25 shipped. The cheapest one listed is 35 amp, 1000 volts. Looks like it could use a bit more heat sink.
Ones like your pic start at $13.29.
They aren't locally available, like the R/S parts, but at that price getting a few and carring a spare with you.

Pete, Just for kicks I was searching Ebay for regulators. Put VR-291 in the search and came up with one item.
In one pic it shows 7 wires coming out. Could this be a rectifier as well as a regulator?

XSLeo,

Yes, could be. I see three white wires there, so that could be the connections to the stator. Any more details? Like, who makes it and what vehicle is it for and how much?

No references to what it is used on in the add. The item # 320718249899 $19.99
Here's the other pics. The seller doesn't even know if new or used.

The link oxblood posted says $14.80. If you put 3 phase bridge rectifiers in the search you will find many of them.
Some like Oxblood posted. From around 50 amps up to 120 amps, 1000 or 1200 volts.
Some in a case that looks aluminum for a small heat sink, but wouldn't hurt to hook to a larger one.
The one that's $4.25 looks like this and is rated at 35 amp, 1000 volts. It also comes in 20 amp and 40 amp.
On our bikes the 20 amp might be ok but the 35 amp gives more of a safety margin.

Others look like this. Rated 35 amps 1000 volts. This one should get a heat sink like the R/S rectifiers.

The one that's $4.25 with the aluminum case has the mount hole in the center, with good metal to metal contact with the frame when bolted on should be enough heat sink. If not it wouldn't take much to add a bit of aluminum between the rect and frame to aid cooling.
