Bad slide diaphragm symptoms

The diaphragms are what lift the slides. They get a vacuum signal from the speed of the air flow through the carbs. This creates a vacuum in the hole in the slide. This vacuum goes up this hole to above the diaphragm, this vacuum lifts the slide. The faster air flows through the carb the more the vacuum, the more the lift.
The throttle plates control the air flow through the carbs.
So leaky diaphragms cause poor slide lift. This only happens off idle.

Could a bad diaphragm/ slide cause high idle like 5,000 RPM idle? Throttle linkage is not stuck the choke almost acts like a butterfly valve then on Startup when cold idles okay but if revved up a little bit it just takes off by itself

No. As stated above, it won't affect idle. A vacuum leak will though.
