I was thinking they would be a standard size throughout the years. I really need to buy a micrometer.
What are the problems with the dampening springs I should look for? Is it just they shouldn't be broken?

Not broken is a good thing.
Harbor Freight sells a plastic caliper that measures in inches and mm for a couple bucks. Not accurate enough for measureing engine parts but works well for things that need less precision.
