Yes, it's supposed to stick into the hole a little bit, until it contacts the ball in there. Yet another strike against that P.O.S. MikesXS replacement it seems, lol.
Personally, I scrounge up used assemblies, some from other Yamaha models. There were several models that used this same plastic female part (XS500, XS360, XS400) .....
