The travel is limited it doesn't just freewheel.
Either the rachet stops/steps or the amount of travel for the handle.
I was a welder in a truck fleet garage for a decade. Using come alongs was routine. They are not particularly fast to let out when they have tension on them but they are not dangerous as long as you take your time and do it correctly. The biggest danger with come alongs is exceeding the amount of strain the cable can accept. A 150 pound motor isn’t going to be a problem. I may not even wind up using it. I just bought it to give me the option if I so desire.
