Fool's Errand?

Yup, as Gary said a moment ago, a 10-footer is a bike that looks great - when viewed from a distance of 10 feet or so. While there are definitely some totally restored stunners around (check the calendar babes), I suspect that a large majority of the bikes on the XS650 Forum are 10 footers....perhaps a bit more (such as my own beloved - the infamous Lucille).

Cam chain - ok - well that is fixable but I suspect it’s worth pulling the head and checking the cam guide and sprockets etc. All doable - and tons of help available on the site.

Okey dokey Beags - on to the second inning of this ballgame!

Congrats on what still looks like a great find!

Pete

Pete,
Kinda figured this was going extra innings! Since the top end has to come apart any way for sure going to go through all the usual suspects - cam chain guide, valve guides/seals, ect. No sense in going through the effort to get bit for being too cheap/lazy to do it right.

I'd be real excited to have this too. But I would get a title in hand before anything else. Maybe the guy you got it from has some kind of mechanic's lien on it, but the original owner is liable to pop up when they do their thing at the DMV. It was only ten years ago... Hopefully it qualifies as abandoned or there was a workable mechanic''s lien, or something. I'd be careful about how I went about this...

... next thing I know this ends up in the garage. DOH!!

The Bad- No title

Oh well, worst case I'm only into it for $100.

Oh, man! I think you now hold the title for "Best snag".

I think I see reinforcing gussets on the case's left/rear cylinder stud area.
See if it has the 4-bolt or 6-bolt tensioner, on a 4-bolt cylinder.

Harder to find the 4-bolt type "A" tensioner parts. Especially the early flat type front guide.

A few more pics before disassembly begins. Time to bag, tag and take 100_0001.JPG 100_0002.JPG 100_0003.JPG 100_0004.JPG 100_0005.JPG 100_0006.JPG 100_0007.JPG 100_0010.JPG 100_0011.JPG 100_0013.JPG LOTS of pictures.

..look'n forward to the before and the after photos. You have a excellent base project.. not too many missing bits. The last 71' we did went to Switzerland.

All the major stuff looks to be in decent, salvageable shape. Tank needs a good cleaning & sealing. No rips in the seat, pan is good & solid. Don't know if fork tubes are salvageable, might just have to replace them, lowers can be saved.
So far plan is to replace cam chain, freshen up top end (as needed), clean carbs, go through ignition & charging system and see if the 'ol gal will run. Then that will just leave clean, paint, clean, polish, clean, paint, clean, polish.......

..consider suspension upgrades... swing arm.. steering bearings... decent shocks... fork springs.... they also make a brake line'n that offers better performance then stock.
Frame powder coat.. standard plaint..?... keep photos come'n ! I can't start on my XS project until spring.... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr ..it's buried in the back of a buddies garage

Neck bearings and bronze swing arm bushings are pretty much a given. As much as I prefer the quality of older equipment, there are certain areas that upgrades are needed. Suspension wise we'll just have to see how things shake out. Stock piling pics as I go, will post a few here and there as things progress.

...as I understand it, getting stuff chrome plated can be challenging and costly due to environmental concerns....
