giddy! 71 within my grasp

I certainly hope so, but when I got it running four years ago, after I checked valves, it did it then , too, but only after he ripped it up n down the road. But, Im gonna yank a screw and locknut from a spare motor, and set it, check the cam chain, fill with oil and see if she fires.

are you in a vintage riders club, Vincent? A guy at work says his dad has a Honda dream, and rides with other vintage riders. Randy something.

she runs!!
I put in oil, and set the valves and made sure they were goot-n-tite, and would have fired first kick if I would have followed thru.
I rode it up and down our drive a couple times, turned off the petcocks and let er die.
I didn't hear any weird noise, just sounds like a machine. sounds like my 1980 chop motor. Its idleingat 1200 very smoothly. and did so for 5 minutes until the bowls ran dry.
Boy, does it have pep! I'de heard these early cams were a little taller than the later ones, but didn't expect that!
I don't have the key, so I hot wired just the igniton to run it, does that bypass the charging system? I know im dreaming if the charging still works after sitting for 20+ years, but it worked 4 yrs ago.
I tried to get a read on the rotor, but was bouncing all around, I had the brushes out, and no magnetism either. rats! I was hoping I would get lucky again.

hope so, too.
Ive never had enuf moneys to chase my absolute favorite anything. I love classic cars, and was lucky enuf to stumble on a 67 fairlane hardtop ive been able to hold onto for 20+ years, But When I saw this '71 ten years ago, I hoped and prayed some day, I will have it. Unfortunately, its at the cost of suffering of a friend.
I mean, he knows its worth 6, and I know its worth 6, but in the state he's in, disability, bad diabetes, lived with mom that just died, kicked out of house, nowhere to go, For 3g's I get my 71, a fubared chop, and a 80's something 250 Honda endure, if I get his 1980 back on the road. Just needs turn signals and a good looking over.

Whats the honda like? If it's flippable why not flip and give him a bit of that cash.

well, the 250 is like a 1980 or there 'bouts. I heard it run two summers ago, but it sucked in some air cleaner, and quit running, and last summer, his brother tried to get it running , but failed. some say I have a gift for carbs, I will try.
If I get the 250, the wife and I will be getting a dual horse trailer, loading her standard horse and the 250, and go riding. its a 4 stroke, so, its pretty quiet..
And at the orv park around mt. st. Helens, they have motorized on one side of the hwy, and horses on the other. See you at dusk!!!!!!:bike:
Ive already been offered 500$ for the 250, but ive been wanting a enduro forever. Street and trail? whats better than that? see a trail, pull off the hwy and explore? nirvana!!

Tru Dat. I had a klr250...good a good offer to sell and got an 79xs400 and 400 cash for a second one. Made it work for scrambler duty. Lots of fun. Light compared to the 650 and low cg. Just gotta watch ground clearance. But round here its all gravel roads and pretty mild trails. Really got to work on a skid plate though.

The oil filter cover bolts at 11 and 5 o'clock are so weird eh. You missed the front of the engine with both 3 bolt tappet covers
That's a gorgeous bike. Look after it and enjoy. Feel lucky to own one. It's a true classic. I do love my 74 standard, but the rarity and one off Ness isn't there when I see it compared to the first couple of years. It really is a true classic is put up there with any brit or Italian bike.

Any other requests? its all original here, exept for a pamco. Once I get the title, im going to update the electronics.
I want to join a vintage club and go on rides, and don't want 43 year old electronics ruining my day.

Every thing is so different. The bottom of the barrels at the studs. The cases have little gusset looking things. So foreign. Even everything inside almost. Such a huge list.

Posted via Mobile

yeah, those little gussets. I noticed them, then realized they aren't on my 1980 engine.
Although the over all look is the same thru the years, the early motors just seem prettier.
The transmission feeles sturdier, too. my 1980 feels kinda wimpy during up/down shifting.
this 71 just feels solid all over. Ive ridden a stock 1980 sg for a few miles, and while it was in road worthy shape, felt, well, cheap. This 71 feels like a Juggernaut.

Hey, Angus. Requests? Yew betcha.

Pics under the seat, and the seat pan bottom.
Your right side fork bottom has the 'enduro' ears. Same on the left?
I like that right side mirror mount. Aftermarket, but I still like it.
The throttle housing has been opened up, telling from the screwheads.
Your rear chain case bolt doesn't have that odd half-moon washer. Not sure when they used those.

Now, the fun part. Your S/N is about 230 earlier than my later production XS1B. Mine has the XS2's 6-bolt tensioner. AND, mine doesn't have the cylinder base gusseting. Close in on this post's pic:

http://www.xs650.com/forum/showpost.php?p=337414&postcount=19

So, something significant happened between our serial numbers, that's not well identified in the old parts manuals. More homework.

Also, when you get a chance, check the casting numbers inside the rotor cover and left cover. The older '256' numbered rotor cover used a slightly different 'Yamaha' character font, maybe a little more block-like.

Then, check the head and cam cover stampings, see if they match.

Gads, I keep thinking of stuff.

The intake manifold crossover pipe is very old. I got a 256 head from DaddyG that had a hidden tiny crack in the tube, and would've caused somebody problems. Shoost some cleaner or such on there during idle to check for any leakage.

My head is spinning, so may have more later...

It is spitting like air leak, so maybe that hose link under the carbs is to blame. But in the tank is a bit rusty. I dumped about 3 oz of sea foam in it. Prolly loosened up crap. I do have filters on both lines.
Keep sending requests for pics. I'm sposed to get the title saturday, so the deal is still kinda up in the air. All we have is the vin number. No registration, no plate. I was told as long as he's the only one on the title, they just transfer it over.
I did replace the glass 20 fuse with a blade.
I will post more pictures tomorrow same time, but the sandman is knocking.

I think a lot of us 'early' guys are congregating here, so I'll post this table in your thread. It's the best I could come up with, pouring through old parts manuals and service/parts bulletins. There's an awful lot of early model changes that don't seem to have any supporting documentation (13 changes to heads???), and will probably remain as mysteries. Updates, changes, revisions happily encouraged.

(Notes on the very early XS650s, derived from parts manuals and bulletins)

1970 XS1- S650-000101 to S650-006686 = 6686 bikes
1971 XS1B S650-007101 to S650-025383 = 18283 bikes (includes XS1F)
