Hey,
I am replacing the sump filter and I've got a new gasket to put on...do I need to treat the gasket in some way? Also, there are remnants of the old gasket still stuck on the sump plate, any suggestions on removing it? Thanks a ton.

You'll need a gasket scraper. I don't know if it helps, but your local auto parts store has gasket remover in a bottle. Once you get the old gasket off, spray the new one with PAM and it will come off clean next time.

I use plain old paint stripper for removing old gaskets and simply coat the new ones with motor oil.

Heat really helps soften the gasket, a heat gun makes it go easy. Take about 6" of broken hacksaw blade, grind an edge like a chisel at the break, a slight angle helps get in places instead of 90 degrees. slightly round the corners so it doesn't gouge, wrap in duct tape, (Put duct tape on a utility knife blade too) stand on your head and scrape away.
