vin questions

i have asked this b4 on a few other forums with no answer.Ihave a 81 xs 650 and the vin sticker on the neck doesnt match the stamped vin on the neck or the motor,the stamped vin is 9 numbers and the vin on the sticker is like 17.Ca any one help? i herd its cuz is early 81 they went from a 9# vin to a 17# vin

Even though the government required a 17 digit number for a vin. Yamaha didn't change all the frames that had a 9 digit vin. They would have had to recall all the bikes and put new frames on them. Way cheaper to just put the 17 digit number on a sticker and slap it on the frame.
