What have you done to your XS today?

Howlinwolfxs, there is something cool about that gentle popping on deceleration. Mine used to do it but I wrecked the effect by adjusting the fuel mixture. Perfection isn't always cool!

Well it’s been a long time coming but I have finally started to work on my carbs. When I got my bike back from being reassembled there was fuel pouring out of the carbs. So I have the old set and decided to practice on those. I did take the petcocks off and cleaned them out. And this is the crap that was just in the petcocks. So I’m going to be taking baby steps. I also have a second set of carbs that I will be playing with.

I was wondering how do you know when a carb can’t be saved. I opened it up and it’s full of gunk and the float is frozen.

That's not bad. Try some lacquer thinner, that brown/black gunk looks suspiciously like aviation gasket sealer.

Try either but lacquer thinner may work better than carb cleaner, That's the suggested solvent for AGC.

Ok I opened up the other carb. And can someone tell me why one is all black and gunky and the other is dry and looks like it’s covered in a white gritty powder. On the good side both floats move but I’m very sure about them.

Not sure as to what the black gunk is, but usually the white powder is from corrosion of the carburetor's alloy body due to water contamination over a long period of standing. A small brass wire brush is very good for cleaning the white powder off and polishing up the surfaces.

After 12 days of contsant rain we had a sunny Sunday. I put 250 miles on the 81 Special. It ran well just a little popping on decel.. I will try adjusting the air fuel mixture tomorrow. Still amazed at how well this bike handles two up.

CBJamie, you will probably only need to open the mixture screw by 1/8 - 1/4 of a turn. Of course I am assuming that the issue is due solely to the mixture screw, but it could also be caused by an air leak in the exhaust system so just check the joints are all tightened securely. Record what your mixture setting is just in case you need to reset it to where it is now.

Got my 80 started this afternoon, runs well enough off the hop to inspire me to bolt some more "accessories" on it. Plan is to ready it for sale as a project bike. Starter drive train was quiet as could be!20180521_175118.jpg
