When I had the VYR bike out for a shakedown after check over, it seemed a bit twitchy in the crosswind ( and Kent County has lots of winds), so today I put the special wrench on the steering stem and put a half turn on it.
A lot easier to do here than in the parking lot.

Looking for a machine shop to fit the OS pistons. Last night I found a cylinder block in better shape to be bored.

She's ridable, just slower than most. I'm gathering parts so when I do the top end, It's just rip off the old and install the new/rebuilt/improved parts. Strange thing is, she does not smoke. Plugs OK. Maybe just the valves leaking? My thought is, if I'm going to replace the head, I may as well replace the whole top end and I can check the old cylinder/pistons and condition of the head, later. Shouldn't take more than a day or 3 to swap top ends out.

Yes I have/did. I run the SG hard and lean. little chance of carbon build up more than normal. I know the seats on the valves are getting very wide from the last lapping I did a few years back. The "new" head must have had a recent valve seat cutting before it was broke down to parts. Very clean and narrow seats when I lapped those valves. I also unshrouded the valves. Took out the ridge around the valve area that was to promote better mixing of the mixture. I always thought it impeded the flow during the intake cycle. I read about it somewhere. Café XS perhaps?

When you do your top end job, I hope you'll share your work with us. I always learn more on every one of these rebuilds.

Ok, Dude. Nice shoes..Very nice bike!!! I haven't been here long enough ...I'm still wet behind the ears! Had to give you a vote..Couldn't help myself. BUT, over yonder when you gave me a welcome I noticed the bags on that bike! I really like them! I ordered some and they sent me brown. Shucks, had to be black so I returned them and I'm waiting on the black. Not like I'm Johnny Cash, just need to be black. But yeah, really like your bike!

Oh man, Think I posted in the wrong place...What Have I done to my bike... Well, Yesterday was my first ride on this bike. One kick and it was running. ( about wet my pants I was so tickled) Was it's first start and run in over 30 years. I did 1 mile and it was flawless! So, after checking it over I ventured out 3 miles. It started to lean out and I had problem keeping it running. It died. I was thinking of the "push of shame" and at my age. Thought, I didn't put much gas in it so I hit the reserve. Hit the starter and it just ground! :wtf:So much for the pinching of the spring and fish scale! I kicked it one time and back in business and headed for home. About a mile and a half and couldn't keep it going. It died. ( Wanna make a guess?) I sit a minute thinking. On a new from the frame up build, there was nothing I didn't put my finger on. I kicked it once and she lit and I made it home! It died and I coasted into the shop.
So there I sit, thinking... It's got to be in the fuel but everything is letter perfect. I wonder how much gas is in the tank? I opened the gas cap and it like to have sucked me in! I had put the gas cap in the ultra-sonic cleaner, polished it and put on a brand new rubber seal. Seal it did! I failed to check that the cleaner removed all the gum from the weep hole in the cap. The tank simply could not breathe and little to no fuel was gravity feeding to the carbs! I put it back in the cleaner and then ran a 1/16th bit thru the weep hole. Today I installed a volt meter and took it for a 17 mile test ride and I got to tell you, It's the most fun I have had lately without both hands in my lap! I've seen you guys grit your teeth helping nubes that didn't quiet have the technical expertise but you kept at it. You guys are shit hot, I don't care what anyone says!

Be patient with this starter fix you did. Give it some time, make sure that your battery charge is up to snuff.

Sorry, Dude, had to go for a evening ride to check the head light adjustment! hahaha I pinched the spring and got 7 lbs break. But then after the break and slight rotation it broke at 12 pounds. Keeping in mind one could over do it. I quit as it was. It worked perfectly until I needed it, stranded on the side of the road as it were. It wouldn't engage enough to turn over the engine, ( I should have put a blank off plate in the starter hole.) Last thing I want is metal filings in my oil! Had an old girl friend like that once...Another story. Hahahh

vtwinsrgood,I've always wanted to put a fairing like that one on my XS. Add a XS750 café racer tank with that and that's my dream. Looks good what you have there.
