Best Phillips Screwdriver for JIS Modification

I ordered JIS driver bits earlier this week but it seems there is a shortage of them at the moment. I suspect it will be close to the end of the month before I receive my order. The Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) was created (in part) because there was such a wide tolerance variance...

    Need Help in Calgary

I think you may have identified the error of my ways as I was trying to do this with a #2 Phillips hex bit. It felt better than a #1 Phillips in the pocket of the screw. I expect that a modified #1 Phillips will work better. Thanks again for the valued information. Wayne

    Need Help in Calgary

I had read about the 57 degree regrind technique. I used my metal lathe to change the angle of the bit and I removed material from the tip as well. The results weren't sufficient to avoid damaging a screw. As I already have one screw with damage, I'm going to wait for the correct driver...

    Need Help in Calgary

I'm replacing the throttle plate seals on my BS38 carbs. I thought I had the required JIS bits in my collection but it turns out I do not. Trying to find a JIS screwdriver or JIS bits in Calgary has drawn a blank. Most people (including Japanese motorcycle shops) don't even know what a JIS...

This is interesting. I just looked at my PayPal receipt and noticed it has the phone number for XS650 Direct on it. I'm pasting the address information from the PayPal receipt so the rest of you can have it as well: XS650 Direct xs650direct@hotmail.com 519-508-0505 Wayne

    XS650 Direct Safe?

I did receive an automated order confirmation from them but I haven't received the shipping confirmation. I was trying to reach them so that I could add an item to the order - the drain plug fell out of one of the carburetors on my '79 SF. I was also trying to determine if the throttle...

That's reassuring. Thank you for your insight. I expect it's a busy time of year for them. It sucks not being able to call them.

    XS650 Direct Safe?

I placed an order with XS650 Direct today. I contacted them by e-mail before and after the purchase but there has been no response. This is not typical of XS650 Direct as I've placed two previous orders with them that were completed the same day. I received e-mail responses generally within a...

Runs absolutely perfect then wont start

Your comment makes the most sense - ie capacitor rating insufficient for job. It was working fine before the headlight wattage increase. Now it's handling more current. Since it stops working after the engine runs for a while, perhaps the capacitor dielectric is breaking down and shorting...

Runs absolutely perfect then wont start

Watts is Volts x Amps. A 35 watt lamp draws 2.91 amps. The new 55 watt lamp draws 4.58 amps. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the XS650 alternator only puts out 3.5 amps. It's just a hunch but it sounds almost like your capacitor isn't fully charging due to the headlamp load.

It sounds like the headlight is drawing too much current for your charging system. Have you tried changing the headlight back to the stock wattage?
