    does backfire = lean?

    To be honest, I don't know if it would even be possible to have a carb related issue with this symptom. It would have to mean that the mixture created by the high air flow and the needle/needle jet circuit is too lean to ignite at the high rpms of sustained WOT. But if this was the case I...

    does backfire = lean?

    so your pilot is one bigger than stock? You definitely don't want to go back to stock if it is popping on decel, if anything go another up. I would suggest cleaning the pilot circuit thoroughly, hell clean everything while your at it. I'm not familiar with the 74 carbs, i have 79 38s and a...

    Kill switch -> start switch?

    1979 xs650 special Hey all, yesterday my starter button broke. The button literally sheared off leaving a spring and half the button exposed. When I push the remaining piece of button in nothing happens, so I'm guessing some other piece came flying out. Instead of buying a new control...

    Removing stock gauge cluster??

    Not the bracket but the bracket mounts to two holes, I used one hole for each gauge and just bought an appropriate bolt/washer/nut combo from the hardware store.

    Removing stock gauge cluster??

    Those are the mini gauges from Mikes. I mounted mine to the same place as the stock cluster but mine are further apart then Petes. They either come with or you can buy clamps that can go anywhere on the bar.

    Choke kills it

    I always thought this was normal as my bike in any of my various carb tunning set ups has died when I pull the choke and the engine is warm. Why are you trying to use the choke in summer anyhow?

    Timing on a post 80'

    Ok thanks for the responses guys I'll go back and check it. Has anyone used a timing light with an advance such as http://www.harborfreight.com/timing-light-with-advance-40963.html . Do they work well? The first time I did it that writing on the rotor in Pete's 2nd picture, looks like...

    False Neutrals and Slipping out of Gear

    heck, I have had a similiar problem for a couple years now =/ the bike will randomly slip out of second into a 'false neutral'. Another very rare issue is that when shifting down from 2-1 the gear shifter will get jammed and I have to pull up really hard to free it. I have done clutch...

    77 xs650 clutch adjustment

    Key is to adjust on the LH case first and then on the lever. It can be pretty tricky to get just right and mine goes out of adjustment like every 150 miles. If I ever have to battle to find neutral I just do the whole process and works like a charm! When you do the adjustment on the LH case...
