'81 Hanging idle & refusing to starting when hot - Need a plan of attack

Thanks again for your advice guys. 5twins, it turns out I do have the adjustable needle, so would you recommend dropping it a step in addition to the larger main and pilot? I'm planning to start with a 45 pilot and 137.5 main like you suggest and go bigger from there if necessary.

'81 Hanging idle & refusing to starting when hot - Need a plan of attack

Cheers mate, I ended up ordering 45 and 47 pilots and 137, 140 and 142 mains. They should arrive this week, so I'll report back with some results when I've had a chance to pull the carbs and change them.

'81 Hanging idle & refusing to starting when hot - Need a plan of attack

Thanks 5twins. Ok that's at least a couple of well respected votes for "too lean" and I know better than to disregard carb advice from you guys... I'll order some larger jets this week and buy a new pair of BP7ES. Any idea on where I should start with sizing? I'm in Melbourne which is close to...

'81 Hanging idle & refusing to starting when hot - Need a plan of attack

Thanks 2M, my jets are stock 42.5 pilot/132.5 main. I would've thought with the new uni's and straight exhaust there's no way it'd be running rich? Also, it idles pretty well for extended periods when I first start it. Compression on the other hand... I have noticed that it feels...

'81 Hanging idle & refusing to starting when hot - Need a plan of attack

Hey guys, My brother and I recently finished the very long build of my '81 XS650SH down here in Aus and I'm now trying to get it running reliably so that I can actually start riding it! A bit of background first: The bike when we bought it was in good running condition and 100%...

Wisdom required - Will a '75 exhaust fit on an '81?

Dudes, I need a replacement OEM exhaust for my '81 and have come across one in decent condition from a '75 model. The bike will be running Gordon Scott straight pipes in the end but I need the stocker unit to throw on temporarily, in order to get it past the super-tight Australian...

    Looking for Gordon Scott

Hey man, He's definitely still making exhausts. I just took delivery of a set of his fat chopper pipes last week (stoked with them!). We've been in contact via email and he was super responsive. I'm not sure if he likes to post his email address on the forums but I'm sure he'll reply to your...

5twins, Thanks a lot for your help mate. Really appreciate the effort. Haven't had a chance to get out to the shed for a few days but will be hitting it again this week. I'll report back, hopefully for the last time...

21" Cross 3 Spoke Pattern - Need help - Spokes bending

I see what you're talking about now... Cheers boys. Will have a go at take 3! 5Twins, everything will come back apart for cleaning, sandblasting and paint. Waiting on plenty of other stuff so just want to learn how to lace it properly first to avoid messing around later. Once I...

21" Cross 3 Spoke Pattern - Need help - Spokes bending

Thanks again for your help dudes. Pretty sure I got it right this time... Still some slight bending on the outers but I'm guessing that will pull out when it's all trued up. If anyone can spot any other issues with the lacing, please let me know.

21" Cross 3 Spoke Pattern - Need help - Spokes bending

P.S. Didn't grease the threads when it went together the first time but I will when I redo it. Any particular type of grease to use, or will general purpose stuff do?

21" Cross 3 Spoke Pattern - Need help - Spokes bending

Thanks for your help guys. I've never done a cross 3 and found it really difficult to find any info online about lacing one. The only info/tutorial stuff I could find was... yep, you guessed it... designed for bicycles! I'm just glad I embarrassed myself here first and didn't contact...

21" Cross 3 Spoke Pattern - Need help - Spokes bending

Hey guys, I'm having some trouble lacing a 21" DT rim to my stock XS front hub. First off, a bit of background. I took the rim and hub to a very well respected wheel builder in my area. He manufactured custom spokes and re-drilled the rim to make it work. He offered to lace it up for an extra...

Anybody using the Monstercraftsman MonoShock Seat??

Hey reelop, Just curious about whether you ever ended up fitting the Mono shock seat to your ardtail? I've got an ardtail too and was lookin' at this seat but wasn't sure if you would be able to mount the shock at an appropriate angle to allow it to work properly... If you could let me know /...
