XS650 Junkie
since it's my first from the bottom-up build, I'm not brave enough to enter the 2014 build off competition (and I'm too far away to go on the ride). However, after the fun and all the learning doing the engine for my current rider (1980 special) I decided the next step would a complete build.
I set out to find an old fixer, but had decidedly more fun buying stuff from you guys here and have amassed a big pile of xs650 standard parts in the garage.
I have the original motor out of my 1980 special that I'll redo and use in this project since the sizes are similar and I'm much more comfortable troubleshooting the TCI rather than points.
So far, other than little bits and bobs and a rear axle, I think I'm ready to start a rough assembly. As of 1/18/04, I think it will be as near as possible replica of the 1977 or 1978 standard in terms of trim. I'm not beyond some modern additions for comfort like a straighter bar, ez pull clutch and the TCI engine. I'm not ready for a rephase project this time around.
The biggest tool (besides myself) that I don't have, that I think would make this a lot easier is a soda blasting set up. I've read lots about things people have done, but I really feel the containment of a blast cabinet is important to me. And no, I don't have a compressor yet (and I wish the ones needed for this kind of work didn't cost $500).
