74 Running Super Rich

Thanks 2M and got to agree Wing, been all
over the place on this one but has given me great in depth knowledge.

I actually found a local 81 xs650 that will start won't run asking $800 obo and after all this I'm half tempted to tackle another xs project. Being that I moved back in with the rents to finish college I don't think they'd like adding another bike to mine and my dads collection of toys lol.

What I will do at the end of all this is collect all the good information and make one final comment to pull this all together and finalize it for future readers.

I screwed up set my carbs on an uneven surface and fell about 6 inches and caused this. I don't see any replacements, well any good replacements that is, and it won't pop back out with heat. What are my options?

PS: new carb gaskets didn't do anything.

You can still get OEM parts from Boats.net. I took a look and they have those.

I've been looking to find a cheaper source of good floats and think I have - Suzuki floats. Suzuki used very similar Mikuni CV carbs on some of their bikes in the '70s and '80s. This one for the GT750 and GS400/425/450 appears to be the Yamaha BS38 equivalent .....

At about $27, it's quite a savings over the near $39 Yamaha one. I happen to have a set of GS425 carbs in my junk carb box and their floats do match the 650 BS38 ones.

But there's even more savings to be had on BS34 floats. The 1980 one year only brass ones, which Yamaha again gets near $39 for, are only a little over $20 .....

..... and the BS34 plastic floats give the biggest saving. Yamaha wants about $43 for them, Suzuki only about $19 .....

Now, I haven't tried any of the BS34 floats, but I'm pretty sure the Suzuki ones above are the right ones. One more thing, butterfly shaft seals. The Suzuki equivalent is a good dollar cheaper than the Yamaha one .....

Have you used this one before? They have pictures of both types online and the lobes for the Suzuki are angled inwards while the Yamaha are square. If you have personally used them do you just make the proper bends in the float to make it work?

And to wing, I'm balling on a budget as a senior in college so this screw up really hurts my pocket temporarily. So hoping to find a cheaper alternative like 5T suggested (so yes there is a source for them but at $40 a pop doesn't seem like it's a good source).

I think the float they happened to photograph was just tweaked like that. The ones I pulled from those GS425 carbs I have weren't bent like that, they were straight or "square". And as I said, I compared them to actual 650 BS38 floats and they were the same. No, I haven't purchased any of these yet but plan to. So, I guess I can't say with 100% certainty they are the same, but I'm quite sure they are. Here's a couple eBay listings for them. As you can see, they're "straight" .....

All I can tell you is if you have doubts, buy the original from Yamaha. That one will fit for sure.

I get it hd about the budget. You asked for options and it looks like you got several good ones. I do think I've seen them elsewhere for a better price but not sure where I saw them so I just went for OEM.
