A new solution to starter noise problem?

Some people have reported fixing the starter noise problem by just squeezing the wishbone end of the infamous spring a bit; without replacing (or removing) any parts.

Here's someone's suggestion for fixing a Virago with this problem. It looks similar to an xs650. The solution was a small hose clamp on the end of the spring, rather than squeezing the end with pliers. Haven't tried it, just passing it along fwiw.

That might help if you catch it early. By the time I got my bike the gear was already completely destroyed.
