I rode that Mt. Washington railway many years ago, probably 25 or so. Funny side note is when my first wife and I took that ride we had been up the mountain a few years earlier, by car, so knew what the weather was like at the top even in the middle of the summer.
When we took the cog rail road up there we were getting strange looks from at least one couple in short sleeves and shots. We were wearing our hooded LL Bean coats. When we got off at the top and there was a little snow the guy came over and said to us: "You knew what it was going to be like at the top HUH!" Yep! we said.
The last time I was there was during a Virago rally we were at a few miles away. That time I was on my 1988 Sportster with sidecar. Step-daughter in sidecar and wife on the back of the Harley standing on the passenger pegs taking pictures! Let's just say I'm not good on heights and did not see much beyond the front wheel.
There are a few Rack & Pinion type uphill railways in the UK.
One of the most famous is in Snowdonia North Wales.
An area of outstanding natural beauty.
