permanent magnet alternator

This is what I used

banshee flywheel
banshee Adjustable Timing Plate (modified)
banshee woodruff key (modified to fit the xs650 crank)
84-85 vf500/vf500f stator
3 phase solid state rectifier/regulator

and it looks like this before I put the flywheel on

I'm using a 1982 Yamaha Virago reg/rect ($6.99) with a 1997 Kawasaki Zx600 stator ($9.99) and Banshee rotor ($49.99), all bought on eBay. The stator is mounted with a Riggs bracket. Some good reading here (and info on the Riggs bracket):

That's what I'm using also, ZX600 stator (98?), RZ350 flywheel (happen to have one on hand) but I'm using a Schmegma (Sabre) reg/rec because those engines failed at a young age so you know the stator was barely used.

The Riggs bracket makes everything very easy.

Nice write-up and photos. I think you have made the instructions clear enough that anyone could consider this mod without fear of effing it up. :)

I take that as a compliment  Its not new information by any means, but people get confused about JB welding the brackets to the engine, the timing marks are not often discussed, and the Woodruff Key needed more information as well. Most of the other threads got muddy and people get confused easily. I didn't invent the setup, I just tried to perfect it and make it easy for others...
