rebuild somewhat complete couple q's

I have just rebuilt my '72.
throttle cables don't rebound very well
would having put the points back on without proper gap keep me from getting any spark?

Bad spring and yes amongst multiple other things.

If the points are just put in without being adjusted, they can stay open or closed and to get a spark they have to open and close. Your repair manual tells the procedure for adjusting and timing the points.

You can remove your cables from the bike and run cable lube or old oil through them and let them hang for a while.

thanks classic i'll do that. I set the gap and now have spark, but I'm pretty sure i f'd the timing up, is there a way to roll the motor to the precise points I need without removing the right side cover and draining the oil again?

You only remove the alternator cover on the left side to rotate the motor.
