Smoke, but only when...

Is it smoke or water vapour? Collect condensation putting your hand behind a silencer - wet but odourless. Oil smoke on start up could be worn valve guides. The oil runs down while the engine is not running, burns off as the engine warms up, and is often too little to notice after that.

Agreed, have a go at replacing the seals, but be aware that the valve stems will wallow out new seals if the guides are sloppy enough. Be sure to use good quality replacement seals so the parts can be eliminated as the cause if the problem recurs.
