Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

I used a horizontal bar mounted just behind where the cam chain adjuster would be, slid it in from the side and tilted forward
That's pretty much the plan. The bar will be suspended on both ends by a 1 ton hoist so's I can easily raise or lower it as I go. Hoist will slide on an I beam.

A "Y" turn upside down and bolted to the head where the top mounts are will let you "hang" the motor and makes one person install easy. No awkward lifting or nut straining involved.

peanut puffs out his chest with pride , pulls in his ample belly then collapses , consumed by a fit of coughing and farting

DANG IT, PEANUT! I just spit half of a perfectly good Snickers Mini all over my keyboard! I kid you not at all when I say I've been there and done that!

those bars are great Jim really comfortable for cruising and just bombing around town and country lanes.
I've tried to change mine several times but always gone back to the originals.

Someone once said that if you raise both arms up level in front of you in as natural and comfortable position that you can and then look at your hand position .. those bars would slot right in and they do:)

As for the engine lift go for it . if a seriously overweight 63 year old can do it then anyone can. Mind you I was laid up with a bad back for a while afterwards lol:D
Nice impression how to handle it on your own. I think I prefer this rather than lay the bike down. Unless you do a total rebuild of course where the whole bike is stripped of suspension, wheels and handlebars. Thanks for the video peanut!

G'day Jim,

This is how I put mine in.

Requires two blokes a few rags and voila, no paint off of frame, also had a small trolley jack underneath.

Cheers Mate,

You guys have some very clever backyard engineering going on here!
I used to think if I did this I would wrap tape around the frame to protect it, but I like what 5Twins did there, what is that? Foam or rubber zip tied around the frame to protect it?

Yes, that's all it is, old inner tubes cut up. I keep all the cut strips and tie wires in a little box for re-use. Some are special cut to fit around mounts and stuff. No point cutting new ones every time.

Anybody tried something like this? Attached to upper engine mount as shown in another example, but with the offset bracket to allow the engine to be centered in the frame without the upper frame rail getting in the way. The actual attachment point for the hoist could be made adjustable with a pipe-and-setscrew arrangement to allow balancing the engine side-to-side so it hangs level.

Just a little junkyard mechanic ruminating.
