Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

Next question... I didn't order the mikes XS petcock kit 'cause I read bad things about the 5 hole rubber seal.
Is the diaphragm in mikes kit any good?
Is this the correct kit?
That's 2 questions..... sorry.
Sorry about the delay Jim looking into that deep, rich, glowing, paint..... I uh, um what are we talking about?
I don't have a perfect size, number for that diaphragm seal o-ring, yet. I might see if a square section seal is available to fit
Watch the length on aftermarket diaphragm plungers. After a pretty good run of overhaul success, the petcock on madness has been pissin' (me off).

Well my diaphragm is still good so I guess worst case I paid 25 bucks..... for an o-ring. :(

I played with trying to gain some trust in the stock vacuum petcock but was not fancy on the design. I hated the fact that it did not have an off position. If the vacuum diaphragm fails then it is pretty much on all the time with no way of turning it off. My old KLR had a vacuum petcock but it had an off position (no prime). I just went with the manual petcock from Mikes. No leaks and works (so far.....). Lets see what time will bring.

So is that tank what those emblems I shipped out yesterday are going on? If so I hope they meet your approval when next to that red!
Just showed up Ken. Perfect for my needs. :D

I had 1 tank badge that was cracked... but good enough to practice on....

After cleaning it up, I filled the offending letters with epoxy and let it set overnight.

Sanded the face some more.....

.... and 2 coats of black.

Scuff sanded again.....

... and applied the decals I got from @2XSive . Btw... these decals are awsome!!

I shot it with a coat of clear... to be honest, it looked much better before I cleared it. Keep in mind this was a test run (I bought 2 sets). I think on Ken's badges, I'm just gonna put the decals on with no clear. I got one more junk badge and one more decal to play with... so we'll see where I go...

Since I started this comment, the clear has dried some more and is lookin' better. Might even mix up some urethane clear for next test.

How about satin clear?
I would actually keep those though...looks better than factory:thumbsup:

Cut and Buff.
Color sand... block sand... whatever you want to call it. Time to remove the dust. Normally, I'd start at 1000 grit. 3M's the gold standard here. At least it is for me.

The clear laid down so good I didn't see any need to go all the way down to 1000. Started at 1500....

Then 2000 and then to 2500.....

Then spent about 2 hrs. with various Turtle Wax polishes and compounds..... and no more dust. :D

That paint job is simply over-the-top beautiful. Can't help but wonder how some creative ghost "XS650" air brush lettering under that candy would look.
