Fish oil is supposed to be good for you.
Been having some recently (a few years).
I remember when I was little my Mom gave me and my brother cod liver oil. But that could have been to keep us regular. I was taking fish oil pills after being advised to do so by my cardiologist, until a news report came out that stated, according to a recent study, it was not advisable to take it if you are already taking a low dose aspirin as they will both thin your blood and could potentially cause a stroke or excessive bleeding in the event of an injury. I called my cardiologist and he agreed with this report and told me to stop taking fish oil. You can look online for other things that can thin your blood such as ginseng and green tea and if you do take any supplements which thin your blood you should include them on your list of meds which will, hopefully become part of a national data base as what is currently happening in the US. In any event, tx, next time you go for a check up, tell your doctor you are taking fish oil if he doesn't know already and ask him to do a blood test for "clotting factor". In this country it's called PTT (pro thrombin time). If you are a casual drinker, having one or two drinks a day, that also can thin your blood.

Thanks for the information Goldenboy.
I will have to study more on the subject of fish oil. I read where it has less side effects when taken with food.

Hi GB,
gotta say I've been doing Omega 3 fish oil, Vitamin E, Selenium, Glucosamine, Calcium/Magnesium+VitaminD3, Garlic capsules & low-dose coated
Aspirin ever since my heart attack in 1995 and my occasional shaving cuts stop bleeding as quick as they ever did.

As soon as I came off cumadin, my shaving cuts stopped excessively bleeding, which was was 3 months after my heart attack in 2007. But you could develop a GI bleed in your stomach or intestines, or a microscopic hematuria (blood in your urine not visible to the eye, only seen by microscopic analysis) Go online and see what the Mayo Clinic or other sites say about your supplement intake and ask your doctor. As we get older, our bodies are not able to metabolize (process, or break down) all this stuff and it may begin to concentrate in our systems. I once said in this thread the American Medical Association recommended taking a multivitamin in lieu of separate supplements , which they determined was all that was necessary. See what side effects are listed for each supplement you take and see if more than one of your supplements have the same side effects. Just as there is no immediate benefits felt by taking them, the detrimental effects may emerge over time. Our bodies shed excess vitamins and minerals ingested in foods, but they tend to build up in our systems when ingested in supplements. I see an integrative medicine doctor periodically to do a nutritional evaluation blood test to see if my blood levels of essential vitamins and nutrients is sufficient. One other thing mentioned in the Mayo Clinic article on vitamins was that people who take vitamins and supplements are the same people who eat right, and vise-versa.

Thanks for the information Goldenboy.

I'm not sure which side effects food will alleviate, but my guess is abdominal discomfort.

A couple of things I've recently heard on indulgence this time of year from the medical news reporter, Dr Max Gomez:
1) While eating rich foods and then drinking a glass of wine, it is common to experience palpitations. They are usually harmless and can be lessened by switching over to water.
2) A glass of egg nogg has over 500 calories, twice as many than the average mixed drink.

Forgot to mention the daily two glasses of white wine with supper.
And 2 days after Christmas the leftover turkey, stuffing & ham has finally all been eaten so we can resume our normal diet.
Until the New Year's pig out, that is.

As Bob Cratchit said,"I'm afraid I was making a little merry, yesterday. But 'tis only once a year, sir. And on Christmas."

They call them the 'Resolutionaries" at my brother's gym. These are the ones who start a membership at the gym in January and very few make it to March.
People make resolutions to loose weight and get in shape at this time of year, and hopefully stay with it. According to Dr. Brian Mcdonough, medical correspondent on the local news, more important than diet and exercise, you should make a resolution to cut back on stress in your life as this is the major contributor to strokes and heart attacks and will affect you more readily than a poor diet or sedentary lifestyle.

Cut back on stress - check.
Poor diet - check.
Sedentary lifestyle - check.

I'm good to go...
Couldn't help but think of you first thing this AM...

I was there 1999-2000. I discovered a way in and out of the corral so I didn't have to stand there all day and night. While I was out there was a drunk standing there insulting two cops every way possible. They didn't pay any attention at all. It went on for fifteen minutes and then one of the cops led the guy into a doorway where you couldn't see and they stayed there ten of fifteen seconds and the cop came back and the guy calmly walked off in the opposite direction. I really wish I'd asked him what he said or did. The whole episode was the highest level of professionalism I've ever seen.

One young kid (17) from my block went and was in the middle of the crowd at midnight as the ball dropped and fireworks and celebrating started in earnest. Some guy pulled out a knife and just started stabbing people all around him. This kid got stabbed in the back, that was 35 years ago. The guy just disappeared into the crowd.

talking of health has anyone watched 'The Widow Maker' video ? see video link at the bottom

Apparently some wealthy billionaire Engineer (David Bobbit ) had a CAC scan and found that he had Atherosclerosis and was at extremely high risk of a coronary ! he was fit and healthy ate well and exercised regularly. All his other coronary risk assessments came up as low risk so not surprisingly he was shocked.

He started a Charity to bring more awareness to Atherosclerosis and the CAC scan which gives an accurate indication of a persons risk of a coronary event. A fellow Engineer Ivor Cummins joined his Charity and for the past 6 years has toured the World collating all the available Scientific papers and medical tests etc and giving lectures . He has spoken to many of the Worlds leading Cardiologists Nutritionists and Scientists about Coronary heart disease and Diabetes and is a prolific vlogger. If you want the real deal and are interested in actual scientific tests and proofs then this is where you'll find it on Ivor Cummins channel. Every single statement he makes has the reference source and links to the various Medical and Scientific tests and papers that have been published .

If you watch no other health video you should watch The Widow Maker ....I guarantee it will open your eyes and change the way that you think about your health for ever

Good on you Goldenboy for taking the time and effort to post all this info I for one appreciate it.
I just wanted to ask about or mention what I think is a major cause of a lot of illness in these modern times, Stress.
Life seems to be just flat out these days and people don't take time out to "smell the roses".
And conveniently this is a motorcycle forum and I believe a ride on a motorcycle down a country road with just your own thoughts as company is probably the best stress relief I know.
Just my 2 bobs worth anyway.
Mick.
I just found what you added to the health thread over a month ago and wanted to say I think you were right on about stress. It will get you quicker than a poor diet or lack of exercise according to the health editor on my on my local news channel.

Thank you, Peanut. This is really an important subject and I have watched the first two videos and will complete the rest, tomorrow. I hope more of us take a look at your well constructed presentation. It is enlightening and most people should try to understand it, if they want to live a good life. For me it was not much of a consideration until I was on the table with a guide wire going up an artery in my hip to free the blockage in the "widow maker" (the blocked artery on the front of my heart). You can tell people to eat better and exercise, but this is the reason why. This all started with the passing of our friend, robinc. We don't know the type of heart attack he had, but this is the most common type. And stress will only add to the problem of inflamation which causes platelets to adhere to already narrowed arteries. Robinc is still on my mind and I think of his passing as another way the forum benefits all its members .Thank you gain for contributing to this thread.

It doesn't surprise me. But for New Year's it surprises me that some linebacker from Nebraska didn't tackle him. I used to fly up about every year and stay in or around Times Square. Not New Year's just random times. I once met a cop there who gave me the lowdown on "living on the street". He was talking about how this was the place to go if you wanted to be anonymous. I love it there; just something about it.
