New to this forum. New to motorbikes.. Been riding mountain bikes for years. Excited to learn more about my 1980 xs650 as I make modifications, upgrades and repairs. First question. It may be a dumb one. (forewarning I will have a lot of dumb questions). On my handle bars between the clutch lever and the handlebar is a wire/plug in. You can se in this picture. It's the one in the middle. What is this anyways?

I have a whole lot of questions but I will start with this one. Thanks in advance

First of all - WELCOME to the forum from Canada’s sunny southern coast in Windsor, Ontario!

I think that most other forum members would agree that learning is key and thus, there are no dumb questions and you will find that all of your queries are answered quite promptly and generally with respect (although there may be some gentle teasing from time to time). ;)

To answer your specific question, the wiring that comes from the clutch lever is called the “clutch safety switch”. That switch is connected to the main wiring harness of the bike and it’s function is to prevent the motorcycle’s starter from engaging unless the clutch lever is pulled in with your left hand.

That makes it impossible to have the bike go lurching off the before you are ready if you happen to hit the starter button. Your bike may also have a similar switch on the sidestand of the bike - it makes sure that you cannot ride off if the sidestand is still down (that could be dangerous obviously).

The earlier versions of the XS650 didn’t have those extra safety switches and while more safety is better than less, the switches can sometimes fail which can prevent the bike from starting. Anyhow - we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Please post some more photos of your bike and ask as many questions as you like!

Cheers,

Pete

Ah OK that makes sense. Thank you so much for your response. I need to replace the clutch lever (cracked and too short). Do I need to do anything with clutch safety while replacing the lever?

After fixing this... I will dive into why my electrical start doesn't work...

I'd start with the button that looks ready to fall out anyways you'll find the thin rim inside is cracked mostly off. The button grounds the starter solenoid circuit to the handlebar.

Note that either the clutch pulled in OR transmission in neutral will let the starter work.

Take the motorcycle safety class. Go easy with the right wrist action at first. Go practice in empty parking lots. Get some experience before hitting the streets. Enjoy. It's well worth it.

Thanks. Once I get the lever fixed that will be my next thing to fix. I will be sure to check for that rim

Where I live it rains a ton during the fall so safety classes are few and far between right now. I will however go to one in the spring and spend the winter getting to know it mechanically. One of the first things I did notice was how sensitive the throttle is. It takes barely a twist! Today I got a whole new respect for that throttle
