What is up with this Bendix Gear slop?

I have made a video to show what I am talking about. this is the third time I have taken this apart and I just want to make sure this is normal and if it is not, then where do I go from here? The gear (#4) is new, the flywheel gear is good to go, the clip has good tension. Everything is put...

Let's play a game called "What is That Noise" -Video Clue provided!

I got this bike a couple months ago and am almost done. Finally got it running, but when I got it the PO said I would need to fix the bendix gear and even provided me with a new one from MikesXS (even though it failed immediately). That is not important though. What is important is that now it...

Can't seem to quite get the timing dialed

Well I finally got the bike up and running, but not without some trouble of course. I can seem to get the timing to relax. I am running a SPARX and a Boyer Branson ignition and it starts and I ken get the idle to be okay, but as soon as I hit the throttle it jumps way higher in RPM and won't...

For Sale - MAC 2-to-1 exhaust for Sale from 95757 $100 (you pay shipping)

Hi XSers, I picked up a '78 and this exhaust was on it. Only has at most 4,000 miles on it. I am going to use a different exhaust so I will be letting this go. I will include hardware and the exhuast hanger. Looks to be in good shape, but just as a disclaimer the muffler portion looks like it...

Kicker is not turning the cylinders. Have I screwed something up?

I got my 78 a couple of months ago and the PO did let me know that the starter bendix gear needed to be replaced. I already had a new one so I installed it and. I am not even running the electric start but I figured I should replace it just in case I wanted to use it later. So I haven't...

    A cafe for the ages

Finally getting around to doing a cafe that I intend to keep. I have done a few other XS650s, but now that I am more familiar with the bike it is time to just make one for me self. I will try and keep track. I got this bike about a month ago and I am tearing it down and rebuilding. So far I...

78' Cafe Build coming back to the Road

Hi! I have built a few XS 650s and have used this forum a lot for advice and ideas so I figured I would finally give back and document my struggles/build. I am starting with this fine example of a 78 special. I am in the process now of tearing it down and it is crazy how nice the bike looks on...

What could cause the chain to be tight then loose as the wheel spins?

I am perplexed by this ongoing safety issue. I noticed that the chain is tight then loose then tight and so on as the wheel spins. My first thought is that something is bent. I took it all apart and I have found nothing is bent. I used a laser level to see into the drive sprocket, I have checked...

New speedo cable is not grabbing at the hub end. Cable, hub, or what?

So i picked up a new speedo for my cafe build and needed a new vcable because there wasn't one on the bike to begin with. My bike is an 83 with the stock front wheel. The cable either appears to be too small to fit into the housing at the hub end or the housing is stripped or something because...

turned a 2 wire into a three wire brake light brake switch doesn't work

Good afternoon XSers, I bought a couple of bullet lights as brake light for my XS build, put a sheet metal screw into the bulb housing to replace the missing third wire (ground) and I am now stuck on why it is not working. My brake handle (switch) has a green/yellow and a...

Question on wiring my Boyer Bransden Ignition, Did I do this correctly?

I am glad to be at the wiring phase of my project though it seems that no matter how many times I wire a bike it gets no easier. Anyway I decided to go with a Sparx Alternator and a BB ignition. These are both a little different, but I have read that they get great results...

I got Gordon Scott drag pipes, are they going to brain busting loud???

Hi All fellow XSers, I am in the middle of my second build and I purchased a set of Gordon Scott drag pipes. On my first build I had pretty short pipes and before I really finished the bike I had to get them extended and ended up putting glasspacks on, but these pipes are longer. They are...

Confused about why wheels sizes are so different from year to year

Does anyone know why the wheel size on my 83 XS650 is 16 in the back and other years are 18 in the back? Confusing to say the least. Anyway any help is fully appreciate. I had a 77 and it had an 18 in the back. Thanks!

Bike "burps" after you turn it off...What is that about?

So I picked up an 83 XS that I am redoing (previously bobbed a 77) into a cafe. It was evident that the PO was trying to make a cool bike with $0.00 and it showed. Black primer on EVERYTHING and the bike did not run. Next day I got it started and took it for a little spin. Smooth through all...

How to delete the giant battery?? Suggestions?

I am redoing my second XS and witht he firts one I put the battery box down low, but on this one I would like to delete it altogether. Does anyone know a way to do that? I have heard that you could get a capacitor (pros? cons? do you know where to get it?) or get a small batttery to mount up...

Rejetted my socond XS, problem solved....sort of

Good day! My second XS. This is an 83 with the electric ignition. I see that the PO gutted the exhaust which was causing severe backfiring. I went a step up on the jets and bam! problem solved. Now that I have the engine tuned up and the carbs acting right I see that the idle will remain...

Rebuilding top end, rocker arm sticks a bit, is that okay?

XS650s are the best! So I am rebuilding a barn find. I have the engine taken apart and I see that one of the pistons needs replacing. One of the rocker arms (exhaust side) for it sticks if you push it all the way back, but not forward. None of the other rocker arms stick at all. Do you think...

    Question on brake wiring

83 XS. PO was a tool and completely had this bike out of whack. Now as I am almost done with the rewire I am wondering why there are only two wires out of the brake light. This is an aftemarket light that was attached and does not appear to be a motorcycle light. Shouldn't there be three wires...
