Should I stick with a 120 90 18 to stay off the chain?

130 80 18 on a '75 XS?

A 130 should fit without hitting anything. I have a 130-90-16 on the back of my'83 Heritage Special. Since 130 refers to the overall width of the tire, you should be fine. The chain isn't even that close to the tire on my bike. The drum brake anchor rod is a bit close though.

Actually, you should be running a 110. That's closest to the original 4.00 that came on the bike. It will ride and handle best with that size. A 130 probably won't fit. The 130 fits on a Special because the chain guard and brake stay are notched out for it, plus being on a 16" rim, it sits in closer to the hub. Clearance in the swingarm lessens as you get closer to the pivot.

It will ride and handle different, not better. 130 should fit w/o hitting.
