I think I read last fall that the state shut down some DMV's as a cost cutting measure. This might be as good as it gets and I might just have to suck it up and wait in line for hours.... :(

In Topeka (used to be a city now a pony express mail stop) there is a link to the camera in the hallway where the waiting chairs are. You can go in and take a number then go home or do other errands and monitor your number and the waiting line on your phone or home computer. When it`s getting close to your turn go back to the DMV and wait some more. Go figure??

    Hi Jim,
you could move to sunny Saskatchewan where we have to buy registration and $200K insurance as a package deal from the Provincial Government.
BTW, my XS custom plate cost Cdn$80 and I can't sell it.
The Gov't will sell you more insurance or you can choose to buy the extra from private insurance.
Both the Gov't & the private insurers maintain offices with friendly (mostly young female) staff and the longest lineup I've
ever been in had two people in it. Yes, by US standards our insurance is kinda costly but you don't have to stand in line to get it.

Or, you could move down here.

Gillespie County Courthouse, on a busy day.
    GillespieCountyCourthouse.jpg

    4 DMV clerks, no waiting.

    Costs me $37.50 per year.

You're cleared for landing, RWY 14...

So... went to the DMV about 15min before it opened and there was already about 15 people milling around..... where the hell do all these procrastinators come from? Just about every one of 'em had a renewal notice in their hand. I wondered out loud if the online renewal service was down? 2 guys looked at each other kinda funny, walked back to their cars and left. OK... not only are we a bunch of procrastinators.... we're not very bright either.
    2hrs later....

    IMG_20190605_114633.jpg
The young lady who helped me was extremely friendly, extremely flirty and extremely cute. So in the end, it was worth every minute. :D

So, I took her (the bike... you nasty boys... not the girl:rolleyes:) out and rode around town for about 30 min. That was about the limit for my knee. Definitely gotta get busy on some new pegs.

First impressions: For starters... nothin' fell off. Engine pulls nice and strong. I'm thinkin' I'm a tad rich mid range... but that's just an impression. It's plenty close enough to break the rings in and then we'll worry about fine tuning. Vibrations are pretty low compared to other XS's I've owned. Again, an impression based on my memory of 20yrs ago. No oil leaks... everything's still dry as a bone. I'm extremely pleased with the engines mechanical noise. Very quiet... almost like a modern bike;)
Exhaust note is also nice... deep and throaty. I'm on the fence as to whether or not it's loud enough, but I worry that if I drill holes in the baffles, it'll change the tone.. Gonna have to think long and hard about that one.
The only problem I've encountered so far is that the shift lever got gradually stiffer as I rode. To the point that sometimes I'd have to nudge it back to center. Kinda odd 'cause it was shifting perfectly when I started out. All in all though... very pleased.
Front forks still have a little stiction from the new seals but I could feel them loosening up a bit as I rode.... so I think they'll be fine.
The Ebay rear shocks are STIFF. I only weigh about 160 and there's not much springiness there. I"ll give it some time and see if they loosen up some, but I might be lookin to get some better ones.

All in all, I'm tickled pink.:D

All great news ! That first ride is a winner !
About those shocks. Maybe you should ride back to the motor vehicles gal and explain that your shocks feel stiiff and see if she’d like a ride too

    Hi peanut,
while Jim's somewhat younger than me I expect he too found the cute girl to be at that awkward age, Too young to go out with, too old to adopt.
The difference is that Brits accept queuing up as the norm but North Americans don't so they hate having to do it.

I liked the label you used there Fred, North Americans. The United States is almost always referred to now as America, this is so wrong. I consider Canadians to also be Americans. America is a continent, not a country.

    Rant over, Scott

Fixed the shifter problem today. Not sure how but a piece of metal worked it's way in between the shift shaft and the chain guide. Nothing damaged, so I cleaned and lubed the shaft and guide and put it all back together. Took another 30min. drive around town.
Noticed another problem... periodically, the voltmeter drops from 14.3 to 12.5. Glance down about 30sec later and it's back to normal. I'll check all the connectors... but I'm running the original reg/rec, so I suspect it might past it's prime. Bought the stuff to make one about a year ago, so....

No joy here today. My buddy Scout's arthritus got to the point where he could barely walk somedays. Got to the point where he couldn't sleep much 'cause he couldn't get comfortable. Stayed up most of the night with him talkin' about all the critters he's taken out. He even took out good sized groundhog once. I used to call him Scarface. He's had a long, well lived life and reminiscing did us both good. He told me it was time...
    Rest well buddy...

Oh man Jim, that’s really hard. I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. They bring so much happiness and love into our lives. Dogs are just so great, I’m sure he had a very good and happy life with you.
