long trips on your xs's

In 1982 I did a 6000 mile solo trip. Minneapolis to Sturgis to the bike rally where I bought a pair of cowboy boots:D for the ride. From there on to Yellowstone. Met a guy here from South Africa touring the US and rode with him through Idaho and Nevada to Lake Tahoe where we went different directions and I stayed several days with a friend. Won some money at a casino here and put a new rear tire and drive chain on. Then on to Yosemite Park where I camped for a few days with two guys on Viragos, one guy with his arm in a cast.:D Then to San Fransisco for a ride across the Golden Gate. Somewhere along this stretch I remember finding a blackberry patch beside the road. Using my helmet as a bucket I filled it with berries and strapped it to the latch and munched on berries all day as I rode.:bike: North up the coast highway to Crescent City where I stayed several days with a cousin. From there I went through a Redwood forest to Crater Lake and north through Oregon to the Columbia River. Hooked up with Highway 12 through the Bitter Root Mountains (very scenic) and on to Boulder Montana to stay with a friend. Did a lot of trout fishing here before making the two day run home (two 600 miles days back to back). It was on this stretch that my casual attitude caught up with me. Old timers may remember there was a recall on these bikes due to faulty petcocks. I didn't get my bike into the shop before the trip and somewhere in eastern MT the right side started leaking. It was a nerve wracking 100 mile ride to Lemmon SD to a Yamaha dealer that fixed it for me. The only real failure the bike ever gave me on all my trips.
Was gone for 1 month with 14 travel days, one day of rain. Camping or staying with friends each nite. Spent one night at a wayside rest and had dinner and breakfast with a Mexican family traveling in a pick up truck. No cell phone, no credit card, running out of money I sold some camping gear at a second hand store on the way home for gas money. Arrived home with $6 and a gallon in the tank.:D

My first trip was in 79 right after I first got the bike. 2500 mile to Yellowstone and back with 3 others on Norton Commandos.

Over the years I made frequent trips to Montana each summer usually around 2000-2500 miles sometimes with others often alone.

One solo circle tour of Lake Superior of about 1100 miles.

One 600 mile trip two up with camping gear to Bayfield WI.

Never had a breakdown that left me stranded.

various picks in no particular order

Young, free and with a plan, awesome.
Hope those with reliablity questions see this.
Oh and I remember those white tennys with the racing strips!

Great story!

(how did those Nortons hold up?)

Quite well overall. I thought they made great touring bikes back in the day. Properly set up the isolastic suspension makes them smooth for a twin. The only problem I recall is on one trip Paul had problems with the head on his bike. We made it to Billings MT to a friends. Another friend back in Minneapolis had the same bike and he shipped his head out airfreight and we swapped it out and continued the trip. Of the four of us two of us still have the bikes in the photos.

I'm planning to do the Stella Alpina rally on my XS in july with a couple of friends. We all drive bikes made in the seventies. Its on the border of France and Italy. They claim its the highest motorcycle meeting in the world. The base camp is at 2007m altitude. Lots and lots of gravel roads... Its 1100 km from where I live.

The second photo in my post is on top of the Beartooth Pass at nearly 11,000 feet. You should have no problem.

Thanks! 2007 meter is about 6600 feet. The highest point of the road will be on 3300 meter (10800 feet) I was thinking I maybe need to bring a smaller main jet.
Great pictures by the way...

I don't like driving on the highways (boring). I drive mainly secondary roads (lots of nice curvy ones here in Europe) at 80 - 100 km/h. It taking you a bit longer to reach your destination, but hey, who cares!

When you made these long trips did you use stock gearing (sprockets)?

Did you cruise at certain speeds?

Stock gearing I am sure I never spent much time above 70 usually 60-70. I do remember crossing Nevada at 70 most of way, throttle locked down, leaning back on my pack, and no hands on the bars.:bike:

I stayed off the interstate highways as much as possible. Two lane highway 12 is one of my favorites. It goes by my house a few blocks away and I can take it all the way from Minneapolis to the Pacific Ocean. Done that.:bike:

I've ridden my XS for days on end. Never had an issue beside an achy back just from sitting for so long. It helps to stand up on the bike and stretch your legs once in a while. I plan on taking a trip to New Mexico from Minnesota in not too long. This winter is really wearing on me.

I feel ya there brother! holy hell it's been brutal! i can't believe we just got 6 more inches of snow in april!

Sounds like we'll get 8" tomorrow too. :(

I've done mpls to kc a couple times... my advice is double check your motor mounts. I discovered the existence of the mount located between the exhaust pipes, and two other loose mounts after my trip. Having had those in check would have helped my hands, feet and brains tremendously. I'll also say that Mpls to Sioux Falls is a lousy bit of riding. I-90 there has long deep cracks. Watch yourself! Here's one of how I got to Missouri, and another during a break in iowa.

I'm a year and six months into a ride that looks something like this, so far...

Most I did on my XS650 rigid was 400 miles......wasnt to bad....but I think I was about 10 more miles away from pissing blood.....

Unfortunatly I went OUT 200 miles to my destination in 70 degree weather.

......when I woke up the next day it was 34 degrees.....yeah, screw you Iowa spring weather.

^I'm going to be in Indianapolis tomorrow. Shoot me a PM. I'll be heading south from there.

I'm planning a trip for next May. The bike is still being rebuilt right now, feel like I'll get it up and running this year, fix whatever needs to be fixed, store for winter, and once next spring comes check everything and anything to make sure it's good. This is the trip plan so far.

Looks like you're coming right through my neck of the woods on that Asheville to Richmond leg.

I hear ya! My rigid took me to kansas city and back last fall, about 500 miles from NW Iowa. Just like riding on top of a palm sander but I love it.
