Just did my first oil change on my '79 650.....

The oil filter bolt has a spring in it, but nothing else.

Shouldn't I have a ball bearing also, and a threaded cap to hold it all in?

Yes, the ball spring and cap are the oil bypass, If the filter plugs up the ball gets pushed out and oil can flow.
With no ball or cap no oil, or very little is going through the filter.
I would reccomend getting a bolt with all the parts in it. Once you get the bolt, the cap sets flush with the head of the bolt.

Thanks Leo. Any idea on where to source the bits? It seems my usual vendor does not carry the style I need.

I was just on Ebay. They have complete bolts starting around $20. I might put a parts wanted add on here. Maybe some one has a spare they could part with.
