Pulled the oil filter off my 1980 XS 650 and found what appears to be plastic in the filter. Where did it likely come from? How do I fix it. Help please.
Thanks

Hi and welcome. Usual suspects are cam chain guides. There's one at the front of the engine and one at the rear. This is the one you adjust via the adjuster (big acorn nut) below the carbs. This one tends to wear more as it is under more load and vulnerable to over tightening. Plastic wearing is normal and proper cam chain adjustment takes care of that wear to a degree. When noise is louder, or aluminium appears in the oil, type to pull the engine and replace. It's not too difficult.

First off; which filter did you pull? If you opened the side screen and got chunks that means your sump filter is torn, not unusual, most of them tear, but it needs to be repaired. Everything you see in the side screen has gone THROUGH the oil pump! Some thin strips can come off the edges of the the front guide and that's no big deal but if there is a lot of black plastic and some aluminum or you find the rubber guide liner laying in the sump, well the engines gotta come out for a new OEM front guide.
