Special or not so special tools

I'm sure someone else will have come up with a tool for holding the engine sprocket, here’s mine.

Got a pic of the tool "in action"? I can kinda picture how it's used but actually seeing it would be even better. And a couple questions - how did you attach the chain to the steel bar, just with an old master link? And how did you determine the length of chain to use?
 
Just an ordinary link, drilled a hole through the square bar and fitted the chain to it, peened over the link.
Thread the chain under the engine sprocket and let it jam up against the bar, use a socket and strong bar against each other. Or you could let the bar rest against the lower frame tube with a rag.
I haven’t anything in bits at the moment but will post some pics as soon as I can.
