Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been mad busy with work, so I haven’t had any time to work on the XS... So here’s what’s up:

I replaced my shift shaft last fall - if you’d believe it, the SPLINES actually rounded off on the shaft, rather than the shifter wearing out - and to make a long story short, it’ll shift into 1-N-2-3, but I don’t have 4th or 5th. Any ideas what it might be?

While you're riding it you cant get out of 3 and into 4? Is it grinding or making any noise?
 
No I haven’t been out yet sadly...
Ok, it's normal to not be able to get into any other gears with the transmission static. Try jacking the bike up so the rear wheel is off the ground and and rotating the wheel while trying to shift while pulling in the clutch. The gear dogs will not mesh unless they are turning.
 
Ok I’ll try that, thanks! Thankfully my Special has a centerstand! Not while it’s running, I’m assuming? Can I do it without oil, and with the right engine side cover off (so I can still look at what’s going on)? What are the torque specs for the clutch basket nut and side cover bolts again?
 
My old boss when asked how to tighten a bolt etc would reply tighten the sob damit
How tight seriously
Well don't break the sob off
Never saw a torque wrench there
