Hoping someone can point me to a good compression tester that won't break the bank.
I'll probably use it a dozen times in my life so it won't be abused, I just need a few good readings.

No specific brand in mind but get one that screws into the spark plug hole and not one with the rubber tip that you need to hold against the hole. Accuracy of measured pressure is nice, but I look more for the difference between the two cylinders.

Thanks boscco, HF sells for $20 to $200, just wondering if I can get a cheapie for short term use that will be fairly accurate.
And thanks again I will definitely get one with a threaded end.

I got a HF set and maybe I'm unlucky but it read like 60-65psi on a running XJ650 I had last year. I lost my other one I had for years when I was throwing away crap from 2 cycle jet skis I was working on at the time and accidently tossed the box the compression tester was in.
Took the compression tester back to refunt at HF.
I have this one now.
I also have a different labeled version of the same manufacturer of pressure gauge for my compressor when filling up tires. My luck has been good so far

Auto-Zone or most parts places are free loaners, with deposit

Get one with low pop schrader(.7psi) valve screwed near tip that screws into head, otherwise the hose itself has 10.8cc per 2 foot length of volume added to the head/piston/gasket. Not a tire schrader!!
I am looking for actual compression, not relative to other cyls. for cam/crank relationships.
That is for leak-down tester.

I've used one of the rubber tipped testers for over 40 years. They are the least expensive testers and will do a fine job for you. The only problem is that you have to round up a buddy or family member to help you. One person will crank the engine and hold the throttle open while the helper has to stuff the tester in the hole. This all amounts to a great lesson for an aspiring youngster.
