    Replacing engine with different years

Got a 78 special with the engine head messed up, I got an offer to get this 76 xs650 engine, would it swap over fine? Bs38 carbs work too? Wondering if I would have to replace the cam chain if I did a swap as well.

    Cam chain sticking out

So I was syncing my carbs and in the middle of it the bike died, I ran out of gas. Filled it up and it won't start. I did notice the can chain adjustment acorn but was left off when I put the carbs back on and the threads were sticking way out. Put the but back on and still can't start it. Now...

    78 Ignition Timing Points

I cannot figure this out for the life of me. I've followed the steps here http://www.650central.com/fsetting_pointstype_ignition_on.htm. and have gotten to the part where I rotate the ignition plate. I'm using an ohm meter that I have to hold to the points, and no matter how much I rotate it...

    78 BS38 Syncing

78 BS38 that I just cleaned and rejetted. I should first note I haven't done the ignition timing yet, I skipped the order, so I am tackling that first today, THEN the carburetors. I have done plugs, plug caps/wires, can chain, and valves. But I'd still like to know how to so this. I made my...

Fuel line: Two petcocks to one

Got a new tank with one petcock, the old one had two. I'm a little confused on how to setup these fuel lines. Could I just remove the left hose, put a stopper on it and run the right one right up to the petcock?

    Okay, main jet location

I have 78 BS38 stock carbs. My first time ever touching a carburetor, I have read the carb guide a couple times, got them off. Took the float bowls off and the floats. I can hear fuel sloshing around the floats so I know I have to replace them. Also got the two pilot jets out I believe. I...

    Replacing spark plug wires/caps

So I decided to replace the spark plug wires/caps on my 78 with new NGK BP7ES spark plugs. The guy at the local vintage bike shop sold me some wire and NGK VD05F resisiter caps. However when I tried to put the caps on the plugs they're very loose and don't seem to really make contact. So I'm...

Replacing air filters, where does this line go?

Super newb here, but learning. I have a 78 xs650 Special, all pretty stock. Stock mikuni carbs I believe. So I'm replacing the air filters and I noticed this line that connected from the old air filter to the engine, I'm wondering with these new filters, does this line need to go any where or...
