I built this bike within the last 3 months. I still have a few things to do it but it's done for the most part.
Here is the bike in its current state and also a link with a few more pics of the build process. I welcome all comments and any questions. Thanks for looking.
For those of you not following my thread (which is most of you, can't blame you, pretty boring thus far), I am in the process of building a brat using a lot of parts from a discarded xs400 café project.
Here is my question. Eventual plans are Gordon Scott high pipes and performance carbs...
OK here is the chance to let yourself be heard!:)
You Spent all that money, All that time, rebuilding, tinkering tuning and trouble Shooting.
Post a Video, or sound file, showcasing your Bike running, let us hear it Idle! or ROAR!
Please add the details of what you did so we know...
I will be needing to replace my exhaust on my stock 1975 650. I am just wondering what sounds best.
My preference is NOT straight pipes, I want to be heard but not wake the whole block
in the morning, I had a set of shorty mufflers 30 years ago in a 73 that sounded awesome!
A nice low growl...
this is the only picture i have of my pipes (one of them still lying on the lift) they run right on top of each other right underneath my foot peg, but what I'm trying to do is something like this (minus the fish tails and my pipes will be right on top of each other)
if i remember...
Just wrapped up my Pamco ultimate install w/o e-advance. Apart from getting the coil mounted with the recommended clamps from home depot, this thing was a snap to get installed. Seems like there is really only one way this will fit under the tank with those clamps, mine ended up with the wires...
Hello, I recently started my motorcycle was checking to see if the bike was getting warmed up. I touch my Right side pipe, and it's hot enough to burn you pretty bad, but then I touch my Left side pipe and it's cool enough to keep your hand on it. (Keep in mind this was after about 15 minutes of...
I searched and could not find answer to a simple question.
Do exhaust headers from an xs400 fit the xs650.
I found someone willing to donate a set for free but need to know if they will fit.
Thanks
I just got these Emgo shorty mufflers.
Any suggestions on how to attach them? I have some clamps..my pipes are 1.5" and the mufflers are that as well, it is, however, not a tight fit..
My headers angle slightly up as well.
Should I cut a little 'slit' in the mufflers so that the...
So, I've finally convinced myself I can afford to make some performance upgrades. Basically, I don't need go-for-broke top end. I just want a little extra torque in as wide a range as I can get. I also realize that just bolting parts on willy-nilly probably won't get me what I want - I have to...
1979 XS650 w/ 2 sets of points and coils.
Seems to be only at idle, but not great.perhaps even too slow. I haven't connected my inductive tach but the tach on the bike shows less than 1000RPM.
It backfires out of right cylinder. Right exhaust is also quieter than the left.
I haven't checked...
Two weeks ago i popped the clutch, didn't know it was in gear and crushed the header pipe on low wall. I finally got a replacement and finished my front brakes rebuild so i took it for a spin. After about 15 min. the bike just cut out on me, as if someone had flipped the kill switch. I tried...
Just thought I would say how cool my Gordon Scott pipes are! He warned me they would be loud but wow! The neighbor said they were really loud and after ceramic coating and painting them myself they look super sweet. :bike:
Hey guys
So the PO gave me an extra set of header pipes sans mufflers and I am planning on running straight pipes with baffles, but the thing that concerns me is the pretty saucy damage to the right side pipe, shown here:
Question is, will it effect performance? I...
Hi everyone, This is my first time posting but I have been appreciating the collective wisdom for awhile now.
My situation is this: i have a 1977 xs650 that was running great. It has new OEM air filters. I decided to change to MikesXS commando style mufflers. After swapping out, the bike...
im new here and i need help , i own an 1980 xs 650 special i have rotted exhaust one muffler right side is shot, holes in outer chrome and baffel sticks out end of muffler by about 10 in, back fires out right side , and fouls right hand plug ,riding 150 miles , i stoped changed plug and it was...
After a bunch of shipping errors I ended up with 2 free Innovative MTX-L air/fuel gauges that I am going to install for a bit on the bike. I'm also thinking of putting a crossover on the pipes but have a few questions first.

My 650 and I got into a little fight with a 1' high brick wall and the wall destroyed my left header. I have a 1981 XS650 SH and would like to get a used header and put some new mufflers on both as I had planned. I saw that the headers they have for sail on MikesXS work for all xs' 70-84 but...
I went along to a local Japfest today and of all the classic jap bikes on show including visitors bikes there were only two XS650 , one a stock 80 Special and this interesting custom I thought you might be interested to see.
I was blown away by the quality of the Tig welding on the custom...
