    Alternative exhaust headpipe gaskets

A while back I bought a couple ten packs of aftermarket exhaust gaskets. These are the ones that appear to be a coil of thin green foam wrapped in metal foil. They are not working well and easily crush down until the pipe collar flange is touching the head. My local Yamaha dealer does not...

Backfired on deceleration then didn't want to stay running!

Took the wife on a date Friday night, it was a glorious 10 minutes before the bike started back firing when I would decelerate and then after another 5-10 min, I would have to keep on the accelerator a lot to keep it running at the light. Stopped had dinner, got her running, but 5 min into...

No Muffler Gasket Found on Right Side. Any Substitute?

Know how when you see a bike you want, you tend to look at it through rose-colored glasses? And after you own it for a short while you realize every Phillips head screw has been rounded off, among other problems? Well... that's me... hopefully not you! Anyway... I'm going through...

    Short and simple exhaust

Roughed this out, pipes squared up with sharp 90 and 45 bends. 1 3/4 diameter looked a little more stout than the stock 1 1/2. The used Harley pipes only cost $25 pair. Will have to put some miles on them if all OK thinking of having some made up in stainless.

    Exhaust Collar Drawing

I got a set of these machined up this week for the exhaust system I'm building. They are designed to work with the standard, finned clamps (hence being shorter than the tc/bros, pandemonium supplied dealio). You should be able to take this drawing to any machine shop and have them turn the...

What should be done with the engine breather hose when using pod filters?

After putting pod air filters on my '83 XS650 I am wondering what to do with the engine breather hose that used to run from a port on the engine back to the air filters. Do I just remove it, or is there anything else that needs to be done? Thanks

Just bought my first Yamaha 650 XS 1977 all appears to be original 17000 miles American spec , bike runs ok apart from a few flat spots during acceleration , have made no adjustments to the carbs to date. Have noticed both the exhausts have drain holes , exhaust gasses are passing through...

81 Exhaust Headers Only, no pipes, no baffles. Power?

Hey guys, So I'm running an '81 with stock headers, but with no pipes and no baffles. Just engine and headers (surprisingly, it's not THAT loud). Am I losing power or performance? Some people say that motorcycles need "back pressure" created from the exhaust pipes or the baffles. Any truth...

Correct length of exhaust head pipe collars

I'm fabricating a pair of head pipes and don't have an old set for reference. Does anyone know what the correct length is for the collar on the head pipe? I'm guessing about 1", but I'd like to be exact. Thanks

xs2 runs but popping on one cylinder

I have finally re-commissioned the xs2 and had the engine running. Like a lot restorations of old bikes the real faults that stopped it all those years ago surface. The engine starts well off the kick start and does run evenly on the choke for a short while. I should point out that the engine...
