Are the pipes and mufflers for these model years able to be separated ( mufflers slip onto exhaust pipes), or are they all a one piece unit?

I ask, because I want a set of header/exhaust pipes in that year range but I do not need the mufflers and associated cross-over tube.

There is a process for which I am not proud of revealing where by a 1/2 - 3/4 inch rod is inserted into the flow restricter (muffler) and said rod is struck repeatedly with a heavy mallet. The offending obstruction being displaced, the end result being a reduction of flow restriction through the restrictive device.
Yes, I banged the fu$% out of it until the welds let go...

I know for sure the '80-'83 are all one piece. Pretty sure the '79 is also.
All of the Special exhausts are one piece from ‘78 to ‘83. It’s been more than 10 years, but I did separate a set of Special exhausts mufflers from headers. It involves cutting the welds and removing layers. I don’t remember all the details, but it can be dismantled in the fashion it went together.

If you cut off the muffler the head pipes need to have some sort of spacer inserted between the inner and outer pipes where the muffler was welded on, there's a standard auto tailpipe adapter that does the job.
