1st gear interchangeability

My kick gear is toast, and the 1st gear inside the gearbox is grinded too.
The engine is a xs2.
Now, I got a spare -81 engine for parts...
I know that for example the 5th gear isn't interchangeable... Is that true for 1st gear too?

I assume I can use the kickaxle gear from the -81.

So, can you guys shed some light on the subject.

Isn't there anyone who can help me with this one?

I have also been wondering how something like this can happen.
Is it possible to even trash the 1st gear + kick gear by simply kicking? I mean the force that it takes to grind these gears. But I guess after nearly 40 years... maybe it isn't that crazy.

You should be able to swap the gearset complete. Both shafts with the gears and bearings on them.
Pull the engine , flip upside down, pull the side covers, then you can pull the lower case off. The tranny will be right there. Swap the gear set from the 81 into the 72.
If the bearings set down in the case with out any problems, the gears set into the shift forks, It should work.
I have an 82 engine for parts. When I had my 75 torn down the 82 tranny fit in just fine.

- ive swapped whole gearboxes before ... i think you will find that the later gears are cut slightly differently...
