hey guys, new to Yamaha XS650 bikes. just got an 81 XS650 Special. having trouble wrapping my head around the choke plunger on this bike, seems a lot different than the choke lever on my Honda CB350. from what i understand -- pull it all the way out on a cold start, then about halfway in while letting it warm up, then push back all the way in while riding, is this correct? when i push it all the way back in, it dies. it was all the way warmed up (1200RPM/hot pipes) -- what am i missing here? bike is 100% mechanically sound so it must be something i'm doing wrong. thanks.

sounds like your using it right i have the same bike but I only pull mine all the way out on really cold days and the back to the middle after about a minute then again a further minute back to mormal.
Try turning you idle screw up a tittle or blip the throttle as you press the choke back in make sure you have no air leaks on the inlets and that your mixture is right
