Anyone hear of a border fee?

hard y rd,

Well,if you ship to Canada with UPS, they charge a brokerage fee. In addition to that, the package is actually shipped to Canada Customs instead of destination, so it has to be shipped again to destination. This all started back in 1970 when UPS came to Canada and pissed off the Canada Postal Workers Union who have since made life Hell for UPS and its customers. The brokerage fee and reshipment were instigated by the Postal Workers pressuring the politicians in Ottawa to enforce the strictest border crossing rules for UPS.

If you can get the seller to ship USPS, then it goes much smoother because USPS shipments are handled by Canada Post in Canada.

I just returned a package to buchanan's that was sent to me USPS. Cost $56 for them to send it to me vis USPS, $33 for me to return it to them via Canadapost. Same box and contents, same basic ground shipping. Socialist post for the win! ;)

Also I dropped the package off at 1pm and the tracking # showed it left the country at 4:30pm the same day. Kinda makes you wonder how the courier companies make a go of it with those rates.

Well there’s the reason that I won’t even order from most companies in the US unless they will ship USPS. I’ve purchased $10 items before and a few dollars to ship only to have the UPS brokers at the border charge me $20+ to clear the package.

Is that the best deal you can find on the tire you want? That's almost twice what I pay for my tires, and they work really well. I'm using Bridgestone Spitfire S-11s. Just saying...

hard_y_rd - where in Canada are you trying to ship these. If you are close to a border just ship them close and then drive across and get them.

I use one of those shipping places over the the border. Never once been charged duty or tax at the border. I brought a tire set back in march and thought for sure this time they'd ding me, expensive items, subject to special environmental levies/taxes when you buy them here etc. I handed the guy at the window the invoice and everything but he just sent me on my way with all my money still in my pocket. I think the border guys are pretty hard line about their job being about security and immigration. They don't want to feel like tax collectors.
