Ive got a new project, an 81 xs650 bobber. I pulled out the oil filter and there is plastic shavings all over it, I guess thats the cam chain tensioner. In my manual it says just to remove the cover on the back side of the engine and pull it out, but only the spring and rod can come out that hole from what I can tell. Do I have to pull the head to change the plastic part out. Any help is much appreciated, cause Ive done a lot of work on my bikes but havent had to go inside an engine yet. Thanks.

yes youll need to pull your head to access the tensioner. you should replace the front cam chain guide while youre at it, dont forget the gaskets/yamabond.

its a semi-drying liquid gasket compound. youll need it to seal your valve/rocker cover during re-assembly.
