Carb help

Took the bowls off today and man they were nasty. Did some research to try and ID exactly what year they are. They had 135 mains so I've narrowed it down to 78/79. Upon reading the carb bible it showed a picture of the bowls. There appears to be a brass "stem" under "fuel mix." Mine seem to be missing this stem. Can anyone tell me what that is for and possibly why I don't have this in either bowl. Thanks for the help.

Nevermind. I found another picture in the tech section that shows a VM22 without it. This must have been another "tweak" in model years.
