I bought some glass blasting media today, the old stuff is a bit old, and getting a bit worn. The old media was excellent stuff: Did an excellent job and left a nice finish on the material blasted, whether that be aluminium, steel, brass, even plastic.

This new stuff, although advertised as glass beads, is actually crushed glass. It takes forever to clean anything whether it be steel or aluminium. It struggles to remove mill scale on mild steel and leaves a pitted finish on aluminium and is not particularly kind to brass.

Some pictures:
1 and 2. Comparing the old glass beads with the new (crushed glass).
3. A speedo drive unit., wasn't kind to the brass threading and did a rubbish job on the aluminium housing.
4. A couple of bolts, before and after, New stuff doesn't do a very good job on steel in particular.
5. Piece of aluminium before and after blasting.
6. Tool finish on aluminium. Ok for tools like this, but not bike parts like carbs.
7. Finish on a side panel from the old, finer glass beads is superior.

Unfortunately, I can't find anyone who sells the old stuff I had, they all seem to have changed to the crushed glass. The crushed glass takes forever to do the job as well.

To get a good idea of the finishes, expand the pictures.

What grade glass medium and product are you using? I still like Black Beauty fine and extra fine depending on the job. Have been using there products at the shop for a long time and even in my home rig with no complaints. Although we don’t do a ton of blasting. I’ve got a PC bro who does pretty high volume work regularly in the cabinets at his shop, I’ll ask him his opinion later today and see what he reccomends as I’d trust his opinion more than my own. I’d also consider your rig, obviously different medium requires different nozzle sizes to be effective in it’s treatment of material.

I have switched to SS media to get rid of all the dust that goes with glass beads.Last for ever, well I haven't used up the 25 lbs od cut wire and 25lbs of conditioned wire I bought 10 years ago. I have several post somewhere in the forms.

What is SS media?
Unfortunately, I only have three choices now: Garnet, which is OK if preparing to paint, but I certainly won't use it on engines. Crushed glass which is useless, or soda, also useless.

Alternatively, I can go to one of the abrasive media suppliers and pay $800-$1200 for a 25kg bag of glass bead in any mesh I like!

That bucket shown above is $80USD for 50# of 170-325 sieve. Isn't that what you want?

Perhaps just a little far for me to go to pick it up I think.

I'd reckon they ship from Melbourne
