Exhaust snort

My 73 has straight headers with homemade baffles. When you let off the throttle it sounds like a snoring or snort sound. It sounds good when accelerating just annoying on decel. The baffles are short with three bolts that are closely spaced. Could these be the problem?

yeah, the dreaded trombone effect. Making the pipes longer should fix it.

Hmm. Might try that or remove some bolts.

take out the baffels and put on mufflers. The bike will like them, it will run better. Be a bit quieter but that's a good thing, won't piss off the public.

It's the pipe length that's important.
I did the pointy-barectomy on my stock mufflers and they are quite loud now but there's no raspy noise on over-run because the system is still at the stock length.
