Gas Tank cleaning question

Hey guys! I’m new to the XS650 and my gas tank needs cleaning. I took of the petcock and I have no idea how to seal up this tank so I can proceed with cleaning. Am I being dumb? I see a bunch of threads about cleaning your gas tank but none seem to mention this step. I feel like I definitely shouldn’t leave the Petcock and fuel filter on with chemicals sitting in the tank. Any help appreciated!

I cut a piece of 1/16 thick Buna-n rubber sheet from McMaster (same material as most o-rings) and a 1/8 thick piece of steel held on with the petcock bolts and sealing washers. Worked well.

Take the tubes and filters off the fuel taps and cut a gasket to fit between the tap and tank.
